Founded in 1893 by businessman Frederick Maytag as a producer of farm equipment, the Maytag Washing Machine Company, now a division of Whirlpool Corporation is one of the leading makers of major household appliances in the United States. By the late 1970s more than 70 percent of US households had washers and dryers, and with 18,000 employees at the time throughout the world, the company was able to establish itself as a major producer of large laundry machines.
